My Take on the 30 day Song Challenge Part 1

So i keep seeing this 30 day music challenge on Facebook, the basic idea is that you post up a link to a song that answers a certain criteria each day of the month, the result of this being that through choice of song your soul us revealed to the online community… or something like that. So Ive decided to give it a try.
Now Im not really patient enough to go for a whole month to tell you the truth so i decided to make it a three part blog post, i also took some liberties in redefining the question as some of these were waaaay too hard to answer. Enjoy this window into my soul!

1. Your Favorite Song:
This took a lot of thinking… because i have had lots of favorite songs. The reason this one stood out amongst the rest is that it has been number one on my top list for longer than anything else and so i guess that would make it my favorite… or as close an approximation as i can achieve without lots of therapy and possibly hypnosis.

Hoppipolla – Sigur Ros

2. Your LEAST Favorite Song:
Just like picking my favorite song this made me over think things WAY too much… in the end i had to narrow it down to this controversial pick… i know a lot of my friends like this song and i know that pretty much everyone else i know at least has it as a level of “It’s not a bad song” and i guess in a lot of ways it isn’t the worst song ever made in my opinion. But at the same time this song frustrates me because of that, i cant stand this song and even more so i cant understand why people LIKE this song?? The vocals are grating, the tune is boring…. although this is not the worst song ive ever heard, but its defiantly the hardest for me to like.

Hey Ya – Outkast

3. A Song that Makes You Happy:
Not much to say about why this song makes me Happy… this song just creates happiness…

5 Years Time – Noah and the Whale

4. A Song that makes you Sad
I Love Sad Songs, in fact most of my itunes library is filled with sadness… i don’t know what it is but i find depressing music comforting… maybe i’m just messed up. Either way i picked two songs for this because i have too much to choose from, also these two songs are the songs i seem to hover on when i actually FEEL Sad…

The Blowers Daughter – Damien Rice

Picture Window – Ben Folds and Nick Hornby

5. A Song that Reminds You of Someone
I’m not going to name names with this one but i’m sure a lot of people who know me and read this blog will know the wonderful Dance routine that this song reminds me of…. for everyone else just enjoy the majesty of Boston…

Living for You- Boston

6. A Song that Reminds You of Somewhere
This was one of my Bus Ride songs on my trip to Chile, im not sure why it stuck with me as a reminder of chile but for some reason whenever i hear it i see the Andes again as i sit, the only English speaking tourist on the trip…staring out the window.

Too Late to Talk – Mystery Jets

7. A Song that Reminds You of An Event
For some reason this some comes to mind, i was on a plane about to take off for a work based trip to Melbourne, i put on the headphones on the plane and as if with perfect timing this song came on fitting take off perfectly… i don’t know why this stood out more than anything else but it did, i mean i don’t really think much of this song usually…

We Didn’t Start the Fire – Billy Joel

8. A Song that You know all the Words to: You’d think that the song id pick for this would be a pub anthem.. something that you always sing along to like American Pie or what was going to be my choice “You Shook Me All Night Long” by ACDC… but instead i went with this, a slow sad song like i like them this song really connected with me at one point and through high amounts of repetition it is now engraved on my brain.

Can’t Go Back Now – The Weepies

9. A Song that You Can Dance To:
This song speaks for itself, and the music video says a whole lot more… who wouldn’t want to dance with sexy swim wear clad models who look like they fell from the 60’s… i know i would!

Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’ – Mayer Hawthorne

10. A Song That Makes You Fall Asleep:
This track comes from my favorite soundtrack of all time, the soundtrack to Finding Neverland, its full of beautiful piano pieces and emotion driven scores that its perfect for studying and in this case falling into calm sleep time…

Piano Variation in Blue – Jan A.P. Kaczmarek

So thats the first 10 in this list of 30, more coming in a couple of days or so. In the meantime maybe comment your choices to this first 10? I’d love to hear them..and have some damn comments on this blog!
Adios.

  3. A general thankyou to you Will for your oft shared music and your impeccable taste! It helps us old folk keep in touch – the 70’s and 80’s were spectacular for music of course, but it doesn’t do to dwell there forever. Love the Sigur Ros, Mystery Jets,Ben Folds and Neverland (Is the whole soundtrack soft and tinklyish?)
Why are sad songs the easiest to think of? My sad song would have to be Lover You Should have Come Over, by Jeff Buckley. The rest I will think upon and in the meantime thankyou for the entertainments!

  4. Hey Ann, that comment made my day.
The 70’s and 80’s were amazing for music, id even go back to the 50’s and 60’s as well… The finding neverland is very tinkly with a very Tim Burton Sound as well with a lot of choir used, very highly recommended.
I think sad songs are the ones that effect us the most, i think that when we hear a happy song it entertains us for a short while and makes us feel good but a sad song is so much deeper and makes you listen to it with a lot more care.
You are very right with that Jeff Buckley song.. that man was a powerhouse of sadness..
